Two Are Even Better Than One

Twins born from a sperm donor. When Jean found out she was pregnant with twins, she was doubly thrilled, especially since she’d always wanted two or three kids. “It was like getting two for the price of one!” said Jean.

A consultant in the manufacturing industry, she decided to take action at age 38 when Mr. Right hadn’t yet made an appearance. “If I had had a choice, I would have hoped to first find a partner in life, but if in today’s world, that doesn’t work out, I would encourage women not to put their baby plans on hold,” said Jean.

Jean chose a donor from Xytex and started on the journey on becoming a single mother by choice. Actually, she ended up choosing two donors. “When I first started looking, I was over intellectualizing it, scrutinizing a spreadsheet of all the different qualities I wanted,” said Jean. She chose one donor, but “it just didn’t feel right.” So after a few cycles, she decided to let instinct take over, and simply selected the donor who felt right to her. Her only stipulations: that he was ID disclosure, and that he had blue eyes. “Both parents have to have genes for blue eyes in order for a child to have blue eyes,” explained Jean.

Another thing that was important to her were photos. “I had to see the adult photo,” said Jean simply. “I didn’t consider anyone without an adult photo.”

Her instincts paid off. “I wanted this so badly that I bought three boxes of pregnancy tests,” admitted Jean with a laugh. After two weeks, she saw the line starting to be faintly blue, and her breasts were a bit sore. “I had a hunch that this was for sure, but I was holding my breath.” More positive tests and then the confirmation that she was indeed pregnant—with twins! “It just couldn’t have worked out better,” said Jean.

Her sons, Jaden and Jacob, were born December 14 by vaginal delivery. Her days are full now with new smiles, feedings, dirty diapers (many of those), those rare moments when both are asleep at the same time and glimpses of their two different personalities. “When I walk by the crib, I just shake my head with wonder, I can’t believe they’re here and that I have them.”

And for other single women who may be in her situation, Jean offers these words of encouragement: “If you can financially support being a single mother, go for it. It’s very life-enriching—it changes your life. I know my life would have been empty without it, and I didn’t want to risk being 80 years old and childless, just sitting in a rocking chair, alone. That wasn’t an option for me.”
