The Meaning of ART

Many patients are confused about what the words “ART vials” mean. Understanding ART vials and how they work can be helpful for patients when they and their doctor are deciding the units needed for their insemination.

ART stands for Assisted Reproductive Technology. These vials are intended to be used for procedures where reproductive technology is required, such as IVF or ICSI. In these procedures, fewer cells are needed. At Xytex sperm bank, ART vials have a quality commitment of 15 million motile cells per milliliter, which means 7.5 million motile cells per .5 mL sample. Typical units for those undergoing IUI or ICI insemination have a quality commitment of 30 million motile cells per milliliter, or 15 million motile cells per .5 mL sample. It is helpful to note that a normal sperm count in a typical “fresh” sample is 20 million motile cells per milliliter, or 10 million motile cells per .5 mL.

If a patient is undergoing an IUI or ICI insemination, but the donor has only ART vials available, the patient can still use ART vials. At Xytex, we recommend that the patient purchase two ART vials for the doctor to process and combine for an IUI insemination. Two ART vials can be used without further processing for an ICI insemination. By combining the vials, you increase the number of motile cells.

Because fewer cells are required for ART vials, these vials are available at a lower cost. At Xytex sperm bank, anonymous donor ART vials are $280 each and Identity Disclosure donor ART vials are $380 each.

While not all donors have ART vials available—and the ones that do have ART vials may have a limited supply—they are a good choice for those patients undergoing IVF or ICSI. To learn more, call Xytex sperm bank’s Client Relations Specialists at 800-277-3210 or visit www.xytex.com.
