Put your money where your mouth is.
That’s exactly what Xytex Cord Blood Bank is doing as it debuts its Cord Trust Program this month, which provides cord blood banking services at no cost to families with a demonstrated medical need. “We think that every expectant family should consider banking their baby’s umbilical cord blood stem cells,” said Charlie Walker, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Xytex International, the bank’s parent company. “But for those families with a child already diagnosed with a disease treatable by cord blood stem cells? It’s imperative that they look into cord blood banking. Through our Cord Trust Program, we can help positively impact the outlook for expectant families with a sick child. This is the type of program that reflects the philosophy of our late founder, Dr. Armand Karow.”
The program covers all cord blood banking services, including enrollment, a specially designed collection kit for the physician’s use, processing of the collected cord blood sample, as well as up to 10 years’ storage and transportation fees. To qualify, families must meet certain eligibility criteria, including having a child diagnosed with a disease where stem cell transplant is a standard treatment, as well as a referral form completed by an oncologist or other specialist.
Through private cord blood banking, families can choose to save the stem-cell rich blood from their baby’s umbilical cord. The cord blood is collected minutes after birth, and must be processed within 48 hours. The stem cells from the cord blood are then cryopreserved using liquid nitrogen and can be used at any time to treat diseases like leukemia and lymphoma.
“Cord blood banks universally agree that while we hope you never have to use your baby’s stored cord blood stem cells, we know that you’re glad they’re there if you do,” said Walker. “Thanks to this program, our bank is able to help those families where cord blood stem cell transplant is an option right now. That’s a great feeling.”
