Over the past three years, we have seen great success with the ability to treat many deadly and debilitating diseases with umbilical cord blood stem cells. It has long been known by most that storing umbilical cord blood during child birth is an important measure for protecting family members and, most importantly, the baby whose cord blood was stored. During this day and age of constant change and improvements in medical treatments, it is disappointing to note that many people are still unaware of the value in storing newborns’ cord blood and the differences between private and public cord blood banks.
During a CBS news report, correspondent Kathy Walsh commented on cord blood education when asked why every parent is not storing their child’s umbilical cord blood. Walsh responded, “You wonder that don’t you? Well first of all some don’t really know much about it and secondly, most are uncertain of [what is] involved.”
The story of Chloe Levine is an excellent example of the medical achievements made through cord blood banking and usage. Chloe’s parents were wise enough to bank their daughter’s cord blood. While still in utero, Chloe suffered a stroke leading to cerebral palsy. Chloe was treated with her own cord blood which was privately banked for her future protection; her parents didn’t realize that she would actually have to use her cord blood or how soon.
From being unable to walk, use her right hand or develop language skills, Chloe is now talking, dancing and even driving a small 4-wheel vehicle around her family’s property.
