Be ready when the time comes!
For mom, make sure you have: cell phone (or phone card, since you often cannot use a cell phone in the hospital), toiletries, camera/camcorder, nursing bra, nightgown, a loose outfit to wear home, bathrobe, eyeglasses if you wear them (contacts may become uncomfortable), lip balm, favorite music and a CD player, hard candy, any birth book you may want to refer to and clean clothes to wear home.
For baby, bring a “onesie”, a blanket, a jacket/sweater, a hat and pair of socks, diapers. And, most importantly, a car seat for the baby’s ride home. Many hospitals nationwide will check that you have one before releasing the mother and child from the hospital.
